Laurie Simmons had her first solo show at Artists Space, a non-profit gallery in New York, in 1979, showing "Early Color Interiors." Shortly after, she exhibited work at P.S.1 Contemporary Art Center. In 1980, Simmons began showing at Metro Pictures Gallery in New York. She is frequently associated with a group of artists colloquially called "The Pictures Generation."
