Upon the defeat of Germany in 1918, the nihilism peculiar to the immediate post-war period found an expression without equivalent in this country. Though the experience of the horror of war was the same for many nations, this book questions if defeat caused terrible political and economic instability that made a difference for Germans among European art capitals. It was the post-war angst that gave birth in Germany to the figurative movement known as the New Objectivity. This art still little known today remains to be discovered. This is the subject of the exhibition "Germany, the dark years" which was presented in Paris at the Maillol museum.
