4 Ashton, John Modern Street Ballads
Benjamin Blom 1968 Hardcover Very Good
1968 hardcover reprint of the 1888 original. Clothbound, with pictorial cover. No marks or writing to book. Faint signs of age; no real signs of handling. No dust jacket (doubt if one was issued.) 405 pages. Tight text block, square corners.

The material in the book dates from the first half of the 19th century. When we think of folk ballads, we tend to think of familiar classics found in juvenile literature: songs that have been adapted, performed, and memorized for centuries, handed down through the generations. But browsing through this book will remind you, for every timeless “Barbara Allen” there were dozens of ditties hastily composed and soon forgotten. And yet, tossed-off hack jobs though some of these pieces may be, all of them provide a revealing glimpse into the daily concerns of the average British citizen of the period. Thank goodness someone determined to record the ephemera.
