3 Morton, Alastair Alastair Morton, 1910-1963 : The Fine Art Society in association with Target Gallery, 25 October - 16 November 2006
The Fine Art Society 2006 Softcover Like New
Softcover exhibition catalogue with no marks or writing in book. Very slight signs of shelfwear / light handling. Painter and textile artist, Alastair Morton was a product of the Edinburgh University and Balliol College, Oxford. He was made art director of Edinburgh Weavers, where he came into contact with many contemporary artists associated with his firm, especially Barbara Hepworth and Ben Nicholson. According to the publisher, "Morton started painting in 1936. For a short time he alternated between abstract and social realist work, the latter motivated by his radical social and political views and his sympathy for the Republican cause in the Spanish Civil War; his first exhibited work was shown at the Spanish Medical Aid exhibition in 1937. This social realist tendency manifested itself again during the first months of the Second World War but it was suppressed largely on the advice of Ben Nicholson and Barbara Hepworth who felt it inferior to Mortonís abstract work."
