Susie King Taylor, who gained freedom by escaping behind Union lines with her family in 1862, records her experiences as a teacher, laundress, and nurse with the Union army, and her later experiences during the Reconstruction. Bethany Veney recounts her years in slavery and in freedom, tracing her spiritual growth throughout her life. And Louisa Picquet, who gained freedom in the late 1840s from the man who held her as slave and concubine, focuses on her life as a sexual victim and on her efforts to buy her mother out of slavery. 16 Ernaux, Annie Woman's Story, A
Quartet 1990 0704327341 / 9780704327344 Hardcover Like New Very Good
Hardcover in glossy dust jacket. There is a little shelf-wear to the jacket, and we have now protected it in a clear mylar sleeve. No remainder marks or flaws.

In her spare, minimalist style of writing, Ernaux in this book explores the bond between mother and daughter, tenuous but unshakable nonetheless, the alienating worlds that separate them, and the unavoidable truth that we must lose the ones we love. In this quietly powerful tribute, Ernaux attempts to do her mother the greatest justice she can: to portray her as the individual she was. She writes, "I believe I am writing about my mother because it is my turn to bring her into the world."Annie Ernaux was born in 1940 and grew up in Normandy. She is the winner of numerous prizes including the Prix Renaudot. Her "A Woman's Story", "A Man's Place", and "Simple Passion" were all New York Times Notable Books. "A Woman's Story" was also a Los Angeles Times Fiction Prize finalist and "A Man's Place" was a French-American Foundation Award finalist. Her Previous book "Shame", was named a Best Book of 1998 by Publishers Weekly. Her books are taught in schools throughout France as contemporary classics. Ernaux lives outside Paris.

Do Penance or Perish: A Study of Magdalen Asylums in Ireland, Finnegan, Frances
18 Finnegan, Frances Do Penance or Perish: A Study of Magdalen Asylums in Ireland
Congrave Press 2001 0954092104 / 9780954092108 Hardcover Very Good
Hardcover in dustjacket. Almost like new, but jacket is a bit rubbed. No marks or writing in book.256 pages with 18 illustrations, bibliography and index.

From the publisher's description: "Do Penance or Perish is a history of four of Ireland's Convent Magdalen Asylums, established in the mid-nineteenth century for the detention of prostitutes undergoing reform. It traces the development of the Female Penitentiary Movement in Britain and examines how, following the arrival of the Good Shepherd Sisters in 1848, 'Rescue Work' in Ireland underwent a change. Short-term lay refuges became long-term Magdalen Institutions, many of whose inmates were discouraged from leaving and were sometimes detained for life. Labouring in the adjoining laundries unpaid workers were subjected to penance, harsh discipline, silence and prayer. As prostitute numbers dwindled other 'fallen' women were targeted including unmarried mothers and wayward or abused girls - many being incarcerated by their families or priests. Drawing on hitherto unpublished material, the book contains case-histories of individual women and insights into how the Homes were run. Though concentrating largely on the Victorian period, the study explores the survival of these institutions into the late 20th century. It discusses the far-reaching consequences of such a system, especially for the poor many of whose children were housed in the order's adjacent Industrial Schools; and it examines some of the misconceptions surrounding this discreditable episode in Irish women's history."
